What is the NDIS

The NDIS marks an important changes made by the Federal Government to disability support in Australia.

In July 2013, the Australian Federal Government launched the first phase to the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), a new whole system for providing support to people with a disability, their families and carers.

The aim of the NDIS is to deliver a life-long approach to supporting people with a disability through individualised funding so they can receive care and support based on their individual requirements, goals and aspirations.

The NDIS provides people with a disability direct access to a "pool of funds". Each person's budget for disability services and support is based on an assessment of their individual needs, for now and for their future development, fulfilment and well-being.

The NDIS uses an insurance approach similar to Medicare, which means the costs of disability for a person
will be shared among the wider community.

At Interact Australia we are excited about the opportunities this brings for our staff and operations to
deliver even more person centred services and self-directed packages for people with a disability and
their supports.
